Sometimes I get stuck. It is not so much writer’s block as it is staring at a screen and wondering where in the world I should start. In fact it is often the days that I have the most ideas that I also have the hardest time getting started. You just have so much packed in there that it gets stuck somewhere between your brain and your fingertips.
In order to combat this huge time waster, I figured out what I had to do. I had to just start writing. It does not really matter what I started with. Oftentimes it is something to the effect of “I can’t write today”. Whatever it is, it gets my fingers moving.
Another thing I have to keep myself from doing is stopping to correct every misspelled word or jumbled sentence. If I kept stopping every time Word underlined something I would never get any idea out of my head and onto the page. I know it is frustrating and distracting to look up and see all those red and green lines, but you just have to ignore them for now and keep moving. I know I do at least.
If I am really stuck and even getting started does not seem to get me off on the right foot, I will sometimes just start blathering on about my ideas. Getting them out on the page and out of my head helps bunches with my stress level. There is just something so terrifying to a writer about keeping ideas inside. I think it has to do with the idea of losing some little part that is so essential to the story. But once you have all your thoughts written down you can relax and concentrate on one part at a time. It is such a relief.
I know that I might be a little unusual, but I think that this idea will work for almost any writer. Getting started is almost always the hardest part. If you can just get some words on the page I guarantee you will feel much better. So the next timeyou sit there staring at a blank page remember: just write!
